On June 17th 2011, Sasha Courey lost her battle to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and died by suicide at the age of 20. Sasha was a scholarship athlete and a gifted student with a promising future. The pain associated with the BPD was too great and the system failed to support her needs. Sasha struggled to understand why the treatment that was “air to breathe” was so expensive and difficult to locate.
Sasha's family created the Sashbear Foundation in her legacy, and have been changing lives through advocacy and skills training ever since Sasha's tragic passing.
In this episode Sara and Laurie chat with Sasha's mom Lynn (Sashbear's Founder and President) about founding the Sashbear Foundation, how they support families, and her perspective of Sasha's story.
Particularly moving is Lynn's reflections on how she would have done things differently with the skills she has been able to learn in the last decade.
